Folds from the nose to the mouth
Nasolabial folds are usually a symptom. Filling the fold itself is the most common way to end up looking heavy in the lower face.
Why the fold is there
It is rarely a problem of the fold.
- Cheek fat descends and stacks above the fold, deepening it from above
- Midface bone and deep fat lose volume, so the support that held the cheek up is gone
- The fold itself is a real anatomical boundary — everyone has one, at every age
- Skin quality and repeated movement etch a line into it over time
- Weight loss deepens all of the above at once, quickly
Realistic options
The order here matters more than usual: treating the cause first often means needing less of everything else. In North Vancouver we assess the midface before the fold, which is why a first consultation here sometimes ends with less treatment than you came in asking for.
- No treatment needed
Nothing, if what you are seeing is a normal fold
Every face has a nasolabial fold and a photograph taken from below exaggerates it. If it is only visible in one lighting condition, that is worth knowing before spending anything.
We say this often enough that it is worth putting in writing rather than leaving to the room.
- Skin & body
Restoring midface support
Placing support where the volume was lost, deep and on bone, so the cheek stops stacking above the fold. Treats the cause rather than the line.
- Downtime
- Minimal, some swelling
- Typically lasts
- Structural support builds over months
- Skin & body
Dermal filler
A conservative amount into the fold where it remains after the midface is addressed, or on its own where the fold is the whole problem. Where it goes matters more than how much goes in.
- Downtime
- Minimal, bruising possible
- Typically lasts
- 6–18 months depending on product and site
Filling a deep fold directly and heavily is what produces the flat, heavy look people are describing when they say someone looks "done". A conservative first treatment and a review beats one long session you cannot take back.
What people ask
Can you just fill the line?
We can, and for a minority it is the right answer. For most people the fold is being deepened from above, and filling it without addressing that gives a heavier face rather than a smoother one.
Is this the same as lip filler?
No. Different area, different plane, different product choice, and they are frequently confused because both are called filler. Lips are a separate decision and a separate cost.
What is the risk I should actually know about?
Material entering a blood vessel. It is rare, it is the reason for the technique and the product, and it is why we use hyaluronic acid here — it can be dissolved. Anyone who does not mention this is not informing you.
How much will I need?
Not something anyone can quote you in advance. It is settled at the assessment and given to you in writing before anything is booked.
How long before the swelling settles?
Swelling after a hyaluronic acid injection generally runs two to three days; bruising is possible and takes a few days longer. The area is then left without pressure, massage or facials for about two weeks, which is about letting the gel stay in the plane it was placed in rather than about healing. Most people go back to work the next day.

Other places people start
These are sorted by what is bothering you rather than by treatment name. Each page says what actually helps, what does not, and when the honest answer is that nothing here is needed.
- Loose Skin After Weight LossLosing the weight is the hard part and you have done it. What is left is usually a skin problem rather than a fat problem, and those have completely different answers.
- Fatigue & Low EnergyThis is the concern where we are least likely to sell you anything, and we would rather say that at the top of the page than at the end of a consultation.
- Dullness & Uneven ToneDullness and dehydration are a texture problem, not a shape problem. That distinction decides which half of the menu is even relevant.
- Volume Loss & HollowsVolume loss is the change people describe as looking tired or gaunt without being able to name a line. It is also the one where over-treatment is most visible from across a room.
- Forehead & Frown LinesForehead and frown lines are muscle before they are skin. The question that decides your result is not the dose — it is whether the line is still only there when you move.
- Hooded Upper LidsThe line where this stops being an injectable question and becomes a surgical one is unusually clear, and you are entitled to be told which side of it you are on.
- Jawline & Contour LossThe most common reason people book here, and the one where the honest answer changes most with age. In your forties a device usually does it. In your sixties it usually does not.
- Stubborn Body FatA pocket that stays the same size while the rest of you changes. Usually the flanks, the lower abdomen, or under the chin. The useful question is not which machine to use — it is whether what you are looking at is fat at all.
- Under-Eye Hollows & ShadowsThe most common request here, and the one where the answer is most often no. Under-eye shadow has at least four causes and filler helps exactly one of them.
